Episode Description: In this episode of Voices from the Front, callsign ‘Bucephal’ – an assault infantry commander – describes how an attack on a prepared enemy position is planned and executed. He explains how orders are issued and what battle procedure follows, how the assault group is task-organised, and how it rehearses on model and map against UAS imagery. He then covers the ISR and deception measures that shape the objective beforehand, how the troops already holding the line support the attack, and how the group is marked for combat identification and moved to the line of departure. He sets out how the assault is controlled by report lines and how UAS, indirect fire and armour are used in support. He closes on fire and movement onto the position, how his soldiers are taught to shoot, how dugouts are cleared and how a group consolidates once the position has been taken.
About the series: Voices from the Front: First-hand accounts of the war in Ukraine is a new video series from the Centre for Historical Analysis and Conflict Research. CHACR has been fortunate enough to receive this collection of first-hand accounts, filmed both in Kyiv and in forward locations with officers and soldiers. We offer these to you, at face value, to enable you to draw your own lessons from their content. The broad cross-section of speakers offers insight from the tactical level upwards that we feel the professionally curious (be they military or academic) will find useful and instructive.
This video series was made possible with the generous support of the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Centre (USCC) and the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
